Bruce Rauner attended Dartmouth as an undergrad, went on to Harvard Business School and made his name in business managing pension funds at Golder, Thoma, Cressey (later GTCR). He claims great success at GTCR overseeing the retirement investments of first responders, teachers and other Illinois workers. He rose to chairman of the firm.
He is a public spirited man. In the American grain of successful businessmen, Rauner has become a philanthropist close to home and elsewhere. I first heard his name attached to the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth. He has posted his impressive personal background here.
Rauner threw his hat in the ring to seek the Republican nomination to run against Democratic incumbent Governor Pat Quinn in Illinois’ 2014 gubernatorial election. The kakistrocracy that runs Illinois has turned the state into a fiscal basket case. Rauner held himself as the man to turn the state around and he was elected to do the job. Is the job doable?
