Bernie Sanders has been retailing the hoary feminist myth that women make 77 (or 78) cents to the dollar earned by men as a result of some nefarious employment discrimination. Sanders has apparently made the claim part of his stump speech. As Steve points out in the adjacent post, Sanders puts it this way: “Men, stand with the women and demand pay equity. There is no defensible reason why women are making 78 cents on the dollar. That has got to change.”
What has got to change is Democrats like Sanders exploiting the ignorance of their adherents. Unfortunately, however, such exploitation has become a mainstay of the party. Grading on a liberal curve, Washington Post Fact Check guru Glenn Kessler finds Sanders’s claim worthy of Two Pinnochios Christina Hoff Sommers more accurately deems it one of five feminist myths that will not die. As the proposition is formulated by Sanders, I rate it a pathetic lie.
