John Boehner’s resignation has sparked plenty of commentary here in Washington, DC. Most of it consists of tut-tutting about Republican extremism.
Nancy Pelosi’s commentary is more straightforward. In an email blast, she writes:
The Republicans have failed.
Speaker John Boehner is resigning. And now we’re headed toward another needless and self-destructive government shutdown.
That’s why I need your help. We need grassroots supporters to show the Republicans they can’t play politics with a government shutdown.
Will you stand with me and give $5?
Not that long ago, Pelosi’s standard appeal was for $3. But these are dangerous times, so the price of avoiding self-destruction has risen.
A friend is perplexed. He writes:
But, but, but . . . the Washington Post is saying that Boehner’s resignation means that a government shutdown is now likely to be averted, at least in the near term. I’m so confused . . . .
I’m also confused by this: whenever the Republicans are ascendant, Nancy Pelosi needs $5.00. And whenever the “Republicans have failed,” Nancy Pelosi needs $5.00.
I dunno. It’s almost enough to make one think that the woman isn’t being completely straight with us.
