Congress Passes Obamacare Repeal and Planned Parenthood Defunding: Finally!

Today the House of Representatives passed a bill that would repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood. This is the same bill that passed the Senate last month on a 52-47, with the Republicans avoiding a filibuster with the same reconciliation process that enabled passage of Obamacare in the first place. The vote in the House was 240-181, nearly along party lines. So for the first time, President Obama will be confronted with legislation that actually would bring Obamacare to an end, and will be forced to veto it.

The Washington Post reports:

Congressional Republicans made good Wednesday on a central campaign pledge from the 2014 midterms….

Why did it take so long to finally start confronting President Obama on central issues like Obamacare? I don’t know, but the GOP presidential race might look quite different if the party’s Congressional leadership had done this eleven months ago.

“I mean, how many times have we been saying we want to put bills on his desk that say who we are and what we believe versus what he believes,” Ryan (R-Wis.) told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday night. “We have to go on offense in 2016, and we have to offer a bold agenda to the country.”

How many times, indeed? I guess we can say, better late than never. Let’s hope that today’s vote is just the opening salvo. Republicans absolutely need to go on offense, and as far as this year’s election is concerned, the hour is late.
