President Obama takes to the pages of the New York Times to state that “the epidemic of gun violence in our country is a crisis” and to demand “a national response.” The New York Times: What a great forum for reaching those who disagree with Obama, or are undecided, about gun control.
I’ll leave it to my colleagues to take on whatever substance might be found in Obama’s op-ed. I was struck by this passage: “I will not campaign for, vote for or support any candidate, even in my own party, who does not support common-sense gun reform” (emphasis added).
Obama implies that there exists the possibility that he might campaign for or support a candidate who does not belong to his party, in other words a Republican. Sure.
As for his “own party,” Sen. Joe Manchin no doubt will be heart-broken to learn that Obama won’t be coming to West Virginia to campaign on his behalf.
Let’s be real. There aren’t many Democrats who would want this unpopular president to campaign for them. And the Democrats who do, those in the bluest of blue states and districts, are as unlikely to depart from liberal orthodoxy on guns as, well, the New York Times and the overwhelming majority of its readers.
