A tough night for Hillary [updated continuously]

As I write this, we’re about half an hour away from getting real election returns from New Hampshire. In the meantime, Fox News has put out some tantalizing exit poll results on the Democratic side.

Almost one-third of voters in the Democratic primary told Fox that honesty/trustworthiness is the most important quality they’re looking for. Sanders won this group with more than 90 percent support.

“Young” voters (I assume Fox means under age 30) went for Sanders by an 83-16 margin. I guess this means that an awful lot of young women will end up in a special place in hell. They can blame their boyfriends.

Clinton reportedly lost the young vote in Iowa by about the same margin, yet still squeaked out a virtual tie. But in New Hampshire, “seniors” supported her by only a 58-41 margin. I don’t know how this compares to Iowa, but it doesn’t sound great for Hillary.

UPDATE: As soon as the last set of polling places closed, the networks called the election for Sanders. Nate Silver writes of Clinton: “It’s still possible she could keep Sanders’s margin under 20 percentage points tonight.”

Who would have imagined until a few months ago that we would ever read these words?

IT’S NOT GETTING BETTER FOR HILLARY: With about 20 percent of the vote in, she’s barely clearing the ridiculously low bar of a 20 percent loss. The count is 57.6 to 40.4.

WHY SHE LOST: First, even Democratic voters don’t think she’s honest and trustworthy enough (see above). Second, she lost in the age demographic 18-64. Only codgers favored her. Third, she lost the under $200,000 per year demographic. Only Limousine Liberals favored her.

Fourth, and this may be important, Sanders crushed Clinton with independents. The two apparently split the Democratic vote pretty evenly. This is, I think, the only good news for Hillary on the night.

HILLARY CONCEDES: Clinton just gave her concession speech. It was hardly gracious. She offered her perfunctory congrats to Sanders and then went into her stump speech.

It was a laundry list of left-liberal agenda items coupled with some references to Flint, Michigan. Apparently, she realizes that it’s time to ditch Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem and court the African-American vote.

The one noteworthy line in Hillary’s speech was a claim that the Citizens United decision was “about a right-wing attack on me.” Funny, I always thought it was about campaign financing and the Free Speech clause of the First Amendment.

But with Hillary, it’s always “about. . .me.”

Sanders is going to speak now. I’m not going to listen. I heard (and spouted) enough socialist demagoguery before I was 25 years old to last a lifetime.

So I’ll end this thread. As I do, nearly 40 percent of the vote has been counted and Sanders leads Clinton by 19.3 points.
