Annals of Liberal Illiteracy

There’s a fuss going on Stanford right now about the proposal to bring back a serious requirement for the study of Western Civilization—you know, the lineage of ideas that brought us things like freedom, prosperity, and . . . Stanford University. Okay, two out of three ain’t bad, so maybe the radicals are ironically correct. “Up to a point, sir,” if you know the reference.

Which brings us to today’s belly laugh at the expense of a liberal. It is always fun to see a semi-literate liberal who sneers at “flyover country” fess up to being a ignoramus in as grand a fashion as Matthew Yglesias today:

WaughGives me an excuse to recycle my favorite Waugh insult of all time. Upon hearing the news that Randolph Churchill had a benign tumor surgically removed, Waugh said: ‘Typical of modern science to find the one bit of Randolph that is not malignant, and remove it.”

I can only imagine what Waugh would make of Yglesias.

Here’s the Twitstorm over it, if you want to take in some additional laughs at Yglesias’s expense.

JOHN adds: Yglesias is ill-informed enough to write for the New York Times!
