Darren Seals, a leader in the protest against the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, was found dead in a burning car in St. Louis County yesterday. The arson squad responded to a car fire and, after extinguishing it, found Seals’ body. He had been shot. Naturally, the case is being treated as a homicide.
According to the St. Louis American, Seals recently uploaded a Facebook Live video saying that Ferguson police officers had drawn guns on him and his younger brother. It has also been said that Seals tweeted in July that he and his brother were pulled over at gunpoint by police who warned him to “choose your enemies wisely.”
USA TODAY, which reported these allegations, says it could not independently find either social media posting.
It should be noted that violence against Seals apparently predates his involvement in Michael Brown-related protests. Recently, he recalled being in the hospital three years ago with seven bullet wounds.
Seals’ protest in the Michael Brown case was misguided. Even the Obama Justice Department exonerated the officer who killed Brown.
However, Seals was onto something when, following the Brown shooting, he attempted to organize blacks to unseat liberal Democrat officials by voting for white Republicans in local elections. He explained: “Just because they’ve got the D next to their name, that don’t mean nothing.”
