Golovkin-Brook

Tomorrow night (British time) middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin will fight IBF welterweight title-holder Kell Brook at the O2 Arena in London. It’s an intriguing matchup. GGG is, of course, one of the sport’s most devastating punchers. Golovkin fought his way out of a mining town in Kazakhstan and is now 35-0 with 32 knockouts. He is, in my opinion, the most exciting boxer in the world. Golovkin, the anti-Floyd Mayweather, doesn’t seem to mind getting hit. The short video below highlights ten of his memorable knockouts; note how often he is willing to take a punch in order to deliver one:

It’s been a while since anyone stood much of a chance against GGG, but the British press is excited about Brook’s prospects. Brook is undefeated too, at 36-0. Unquestionably one of the world’s top fighters, he is moving up in class to take on Golovkin. Normally that would sound like an impossible task, but at the weigh-in last night Brook was every bit as big as Golovkin and looked to be in tremendous condition:

Golovkin is on the left.

Golovkin is on the left.

Bettors are respecting Brook’s skills; he is currently a 4-1 underdog, which isn’t bad for a GGG fight. And I am told that CBS Boxing is going out on a limb, predicting Brook to win by decision. That could happen, but it has been more than eight years since anyone went the distance with Golovkin.

The fight will be televised in the U.S. on regular HBO (not PPV) at 5:30 EST, tomorrow. (I believe that is just the main event, not the whole card.) It will definitely be worth tuning in for.
