Golden Globe Coda

I wrote about the Trump hate-fest at the Golden Globes last night while the show was in progress, based on a news account. (I would rather get a root canal than watch a Hollywood awards program.) Subsequent to my post, Meryl Streep went completely over the top with Trump Derangement Syndrome, for which she has been appropriately bashed non-stop for the last 20-odd hours. Still, crazy as Streep’s screed was, I am not sure she topped Hugh Laurie’s claim that he won his award “at the last ever Golden Globes.” Did he mean to suggest that President Trump will somehow decree an end to Hollywood awards shows? Not even Trump’s biggest fans are that optimistic.

You might have wondered: how did the rest of the film industry react to last night’s evening of Democratic Party promotion? Did wiser heads think the Trump-bashing went too far?

Not as far as I have seen. On the contrary, Deadline Hollywood faulted the show because…host Jimmy Fallon did not rip Donald Trump sufficiently!

In the first major awards show since Donald Trump was elected President, the Tonight Show host made it clear this is not a job for nice guys as the NBC broadcast started off tepid and politically tame and got colder and weaker fast – at least from Fallon himself. Maybe it was the fear of a scathing tweet from the President-elect himself, but Fallon, who has had the ex-Celebrity Apprentice host on his late night show a number of times, stayed far off the political field and opted for bad hip-hop parodies.

The Deadline Hollywood writer adds that Fallon was “way too cautious,” while Hugh Laurie “slayed the crowd and the GOP with his victory speech.”

So is Fallon a Republican? Did he praise Donald Trump? Not exactly. These were some of his jokes, which were deemed not sufficiently anti-Trump:

This is the Golden Globes, one of the few places left where America still honors the popular vote.

The film “Florence Foster Jenkins” is nominated. The character, the character has been dubbed the world’s worst opera singer. And even she turned down performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration.

“Game of Thrones” is nominated tonight. The show has so many plot twists and shocking moments. A lot of people have wondered what it would have been like if King Joffrey had lived. In 12 days we’ll find out.

Of course there’s always the ballots for tonight’s Golden Globes, carefully tabulated by the accounting firm of Ernst and Young and Putin.

This is deemed insufficiently anti-Trump. I am not sure where Hollywood got the idea that it has a duty to viciously smear our president-elect. I am pretty certain that no one criticized the Golden Globes host in 2009 for not being hard enough on Barack Obama. Are these people nuts, or are they just loyal members of the Democratic Party? You be the judge.
