Ossoff update [UPDATED]

Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff is just below 50 percent in his quest to wrest Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District from Republican control. The last tally I saw (a little before midnight on Tuesday) had him at 48.6 percent.

If Ossoff doesn’t hit the 50 percent (plus one vote) mark, he will face a runoff. At 48.6 percent, I think you’d have to like his chances.

However, Ossoff’s number has been declining all night, and may continue to do so. It may be headed towards the 46.8 percent that Hillary Clinton captured last November.

If so, the Ossoff t-shirt would write itself: “I spent $8.3 million dollars and all I got was Hillary’s lousy number.”

Actually, Hillary’s number would only be but so lousy for Ossoff. It would make for a very interesting runoff election.

Against which Republican? Karen Handel, an establishment figure who once served as Georgia’s Secretary of State. She’s currently at 19.5 percent, meaning she has a long way to go to win the runoff.

In any case, the Republican Party apparently has lived to fight another day in Georgia’s Sixth District.

UPDATE: There will definitely be a runoff, which didn’t prevent Ossoff from declaring today’s election “a victory for the ages.”

Which ages? No adult ones.
