Mueller hires another Clinton backer

“Special counsel” Robert Mueller has hired another liberal Democrat to his expanding team. He has added Elizabeth Prelogar, who serves in the Office of the Solicitor General.

Prelogar’s credentials are impressive, but do not appear to include prosecution or investigative experience. It looks like she has been added to help liberal Michael Dreeben, also of the Solicitor General’s Office, concoct a legal case against President Trump.

As the National Law Journal points out, the hiring of Dreeben “was widely seen as a sign that Mueller was investigating possible criminal violations by President Donald Trump or others.” The addition of Dreeben’s colleague reinforces that perception.

The National Law Journal uses the phrase “Donald Trump or others.” But the “or others” part is dubious.

Would Dreeben and Prelogar really be enlisted, and agree to join, a team investigating, say, Carter Page, Michael Flynn, and Jared Kushner? It’s hard to resist the conclusion that Mueller and his gang are hunting bigger game.

The National Law Journal hides the fact that Prelogar is a partisan. In its article, Neal Katyal, formerly a top Obama administration lawyer, characterizes her as “completely apolitical.”

Nonsense. Prelogar contributed to the 2012 Obama campaign and to the 2016 Clinton campaign.

The amounts were small ($500 for Obama and $250 for Clinton) by comparison to the splashy donations of other members of Team Mueller, as one would expect from a young lawyer. But they contradict the claim that Prelogar is “completely apolitical.” Obviously, she’s a liberal Democrat, like other key players on Mueller’s team.

Prelogar’s politics are also signaled by her clerkships. She clerked for Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elana Kagan. That’s a daily double of left-liberalism.

Mueller’s staffing decisions create the appearance not just that President Trump is unlikely to get a fair shake, but that Mueller, a friend of James Comey, may not even intend to give him one.

STEVE comments: Here’s a wacky hypothesis—what if Mueller is hiring all these Clintonistas so that when the investigation clears Trump, it will be invulnerable from attack from the left? Just as nothing from the Trump playbook for the last two years has gone according to the usual patterns, I wouldn’t be surprised if this investigation also breaks out of the familiar pattern.
