The New York Times has posted an extremely detailed map of the 2016 presidential election. It reflects the results of the election by county and includes a few interactive features. Click through the link above to check it out.
The map is of course overwhelmingly red, reflecting Republican dominance by area rather than population. Taking a look at blue Minnesota, for example, where Hillary Clinton narrowly defeated Donald Trump by 1.5 percent of the vote, I find that Trump defeated Clinton in 78 of 87 counties. Carry me back to Morrison County (Trump 73 percent, Clinton 21 percent). And Morrison County already held a special place in my heart because of the late Minnesota Supreme Court Justice John Simonett’s article “The common law of Morrison County.” I should add that I had to check my reading of the Times map against Politico’s map of Minnesota’s 2016 election results to confirm the number (I didn’t have it right).
The map’s interactive features are entertaining in their own way. President Trump could lose himself in this map dreaming of reform of the electoral college system.
