It’s giant bucket full-butter popcorn time watching the left not know how to react to Trump trashing the Koch brothers. Naturally I had to do up a custom meme just for the occasion. Not only are the Kochs disaffected with the Trump policy on trade, but they are also way more pro-immigration.
Which brings me back to those old comments from Bernie Sanders that the left really want to make disappear down an Orwellian memory hole (with Bernie’s full cooperation, it turns out, since open borders is now the central dogma of the Democratic Party).
Remember that Sanders voted against the Bush Administration’s immigration reform proposal in 2007 (big labor also opposed that bill). Sanders’s most famous quote about open borders immigration is that it is “a Koch brothers proposal.”
Here are some of Bernie’s greatest hits on the issue:
2007: “If poverty is increasing and if wages are going down, I don’t know why we need millions of people to be coming into this country as guest workers who will work for lower wages than American workers and drive waged down even lower.”
2015: “It would make everybody in America poorer—you’re doing away with the concept of a nation state… What right-wing people in this country would love is an open-border policy. Bring in all kinds of people, work for $2 or $3 an hour, that would be great for them. I don’t believe in that. I think we have to raise wages in this country, I think we have to do everything we can to create millions of jobs.
“You know what youth unemployment is in the United States of America today? … You think we should open the borders and bring in a lot of low-wage workers, or do you think maybe we should try to get jobs for those kids?”
“There is a reason that Wall Street likes immigration reform. What I think they’re interested in is seeing a process by which we can bring low-wage labor into this county.”
“When you have 36 percent of Hispanic kids in this country who can’t find jobs, and you bring a lot of unskilled workers into this country, what do you think happens to that 36 percent of kids who are today unemployed? Fifty-one percent of African-American kids? I don’t think there’s any presidential candidate, none, who thinks we should open up the borders.“
He should recheck that last statement. As Ron Zeigler used to say, that statement is “no longer operative.”
Meanwhile, out in Colorado, some lefties have put up a billboard supposedly mocking the GOP by replacing the “O” with the old Communist hammer and sickle. But I’m confused—isn’t this more likely to make leftists like the GOP? Maybe Steve Bannon was right in describing his project as the “new Leninism.” It’s tough keeping up with the correct leftist line on things. Probably another Koch brothers plot.
