UK Tories: Life Imitates Art [With Comment by John]

The British Tory Party, facing the electorate on July 4, and according to the polls heading for a wipeout ofter several years of incompetence in office starting with Boris Johnson totally flubbing COVID, have announced a new gambit:

Lagging in polls, UK Conservatives pitch national service at 18

Britain’s Conservative Party will introduce mandatory national service for 18-year-olds if it wins the national election on July 4, comprising military or community participation, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Sunday.

Young adults will be able to choose between spending one weekend a month volunteering over the course of a year, or take up one of 30,000 spaces to spend a year in the armed forces, Sunak said.

Seriously, Tories? You’re now lifting campaign ideas from 35-year old episodes of Yes, Prime Minister? Will it really be “the Grand Design” for real?

The Labour Party will be terrible in office, but the Tory Party deserves to lose.

JOHN adds: Boris Johnson did indeed flub covid, like nearly all national leaders. To me, even worse was his signing on with, and championing, the “green” agenda. That was an opportunity for Johnson to lead, to try to head off England’s ongoing economic decline. But instead, he completely failed to understand how dumb “green” energy is, and how badly it would damage ordinary Britons. Not that Labour would have done better, of course. But still, given its utter failure to be conservative, it is hard to shed tears over the Conservative Party. Maybe it will learn from the experience.
