Stop making sense, KJP edition

You may have missed the news that Karine Jean-Pierre has been promoted from the position of White House press secretary to senior adviser. Whom is she advising? As KJP’s predecessor liked to put it, we’ll have to circle back to you on that one.

The Biden administration has recently announced that it is sending $157 million in additional funding to Lebanon. Lebanon has no independent government. The government is under the control of Hezbollah. That raises the question why we are sending one thin dime in that direction.

That’s not the question Peter Doocy asked KJP yesterday. Rather, Doocy wondered why the administration “has money to send to Lebanon without Congress coming back, but Congress does have to come back to approve money to send to people in North Carolina.” Doocy modestly asked if he had that right. The question set her off (White House transcript here).

Watching the exchange on X yesterday, I thought that KJP’s outfit alluded to the famous Big Suit that David Byrne wore in the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense. I’m not sure KJP has ever made sense, but the allusion fits her work. The title of the film is drawn from the song “Girlfriend Is Better” (“As we get older and stop making sense…”) Below is a 47-second clip of Byrne singing the song in the Big Suit.

Suffice it to say I wasn’t the only one with the thought.
