Several new items to highlight over on my new “Political Questions” Substack site. I’ve finally started a promised series on “Leftist Fragility,” with many more installments to come. I’ve also posted an old unpublished lecture of mine entitled “Eminent Progressives,” which is an homage of sorts of Lytton Strachey’s famous takedown, Eminent Victorians. It’s a bit long at 10,000 words, so a serious commitment of time and recommended only for readers with a deep interest in the legacy of “Progressivism” in American politics and history. It’s an important question, but that length is still asking a lot of readers. but shorter than the contemplated book it was intended to become (and might still someday).
But the most unusual entry this week is the second chapter of a quasi-memoir (“And the Stars of Heaven Shall Fall“) that is a radical and intensely personal experiment for me. I explain some of the background in the headnote, and why I’m withholding the first chapter for the time being. It’s also 10,000 words long, but some early readers have expressed enthusiasm for continuing the project.
To repeat, it is my intent for all content on Political Questions will remain free, but I am grateful for the many readers who have expressed tangible support by signing up to be paying subscribers. I’ll add that if the paying subscriber base grows, I’ll be able to invite more writers to contribute to the site and offer to pay them a token amount.
And I still have a lot of work to do on the format of the site, etc. Stay tuned, sign up to receive email notices of new articles, or drop by often.
