The adjacent post apparently refuses to update with the correct photo (below), which I have in fact added to the post. I’m not smiling. That much I can tell you. Therefore this restatement.
For 41 years Esquire featured a photo of Richard Nixon in its annual year-end Dubious Achievements feature accompanied by the headline WHY IS THIS MAN LAUGHING? I thought of it yesterday when President Biden welcomed President Trump to the White House in connection with the transition to a second Trump presidency. The two of them held a cordial meeting in the Oval Office. The related photo op showed Biden to be a happy man. I would reformulate the Esquire question as to Biden in the photo below: WHY IS THIS MAN SMILING?
