President Trump’s opposition to illegal immigration had more than a little to do with his stunning defeat of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and may have been the leading issue (after the economy) that accounted for his stunning reelection in in 2024. President Biden’s opening of the borders and invitation to come on up proved not to be hugely popular among likely voters.
Biden’s invitation was a shot heard ’round the world, but this one threatened the undoing of the American revolution. Democrats have treated illegal immigrants as a core constituency for a couple generations now, and yet there is a limit. As a wise man put it in days of old: “If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.”
In this case, someone has to stop it. That would be President Trump and his agents.
A few signposts on the way to the “cannot go on forever” marker should probably be noted. Among them were repeated assurances that the border is (was) under control. That the unrestricted entry of illegal aliens comports with the rule of law. That these illegal aliens created no burdens or problems, or no more than American citizens. That they should be treated like honored guests at taxpayer expense. That the criminal aliens among them should be ignored.
If an enemy wanted to undermine the sovereignty and survival of the United States, he might have done as Biden did. What Biden did needs to be undone to the maximum extent possible.
Tom Homan has gone to work as President Trump’s “border czar.” Like Biden in reverse, Homan began the great undoing on day one. Among Homan’s recent observations: “It’s not OK to violate the laws of this country. We have millions of people standing in line, taking the test, doing their background investigation, paying the fees that want to come in the right way. So if you’re in the country illegally, you got a problem.”
It seems like a vow of common sense. Will somebody say amen?
Homan asked: “What price [do] you put on national security?” He answered: “When you don’t secure that border, that’s when national security threats enter the country. That’s when sex trafficking goes up. That’s when, you know, that’s when the fentanyl comes in.”
As I say, common sense.
Since day one Homan has led the roundup and deportation of illegal aliens convicted of crimes. Within two weeks ICE had rounded up a sufficient number to return two planeloads to Colombia.
In other words, on day one ICE knew where to find the perpetrators. The Biden administration had tied the hands of law enforcement. That is an astounding fact. It is almost unbelievable.
Who in his right mind thought it was hunky dory? The Biden administration thought so. The administration’s Democrat supporters thought so. Others have now begun the crying game. Maybe the current iteration of Democratic orthodoxy reflects a mental illness. As a general matter, however, it’s hard to believe that even they don’t know something does not compute.
There is much more that could and should be said. For the moment, David Strom says what needs to be said in the Hot Air column “ICE Knew Where the Criminal Aliens Were–and Mayorkas/Biden Kept Them Free.”
