Anti-Semitism
Universities vs. Jews, and America
The House Committee on Education and the Workforce has released a report titled “Antisemitism On College Campuses Exposed.” At 122 pages, plus a much longer appendix, I haven’t had time to read it all. I want to call attention to one section of the report that describes the reaction of some educators and politicians to the scrutiny that universities received in the wake of widespread anti-Semitic activity on their campuses. »
A word from Jerry Wartski
The Trump campaign has released the video of Holocaust survivor Jerry Wartski below. Wartski met Trump in Brooklyn at the Ohel of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. They prayed for the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza. Wartski rejects the “Trump Is Hitler” theme that the Harris campaign is currently peddling in its quest to defeat President Trump. The New York Post has background on the video here, the »
Trump Is In Good Company
So Kamala Harris’s last, desperate ploy is to go full Hitler. There is nothing surprising about this; as we and many others have said, repeatedly, the Democrats have called every prominent Republican since Thomas Dewey another Hitler. Abraham Lincoln obviously predated Adolf, but the Democrats’ attacks on him as a would-be dictator, a threat to the fundamental human right to own slaves, was a precursor. Comparing any American political faction »
“What he’s talking about, it’s real”
Jon Levine has the New York Post story: “Kamala Harris publicly agrees with protestor accusing Israel of genocide: ‘What he’s talking about, it’s real.’” What she’s talking about — it’s unreal. The imputation of genocide to Israel is an Orwellian phenomenon. Israel has taken many excruciating losses because of the IDF’s concern for innocent civilian life. WATCH — Vice President Harris in response to a heckler screaming that Israel is »
Get the Jew: The video
The Wall Street Journal has posted the video of Michael Pack’s documentary unfortunately timely documentary Get the Jew. Lloyd Billinsgley wrote about it here. The Journal explains in the paragraph that accompanies the video as posted at YouTube: This 20 minute documentary sheds light on the worst antisemitic riot in American history, which occurred in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in 1991. Triggered by a Hasidic man running a red light and »
Get The Jew
Get the Jew is the title of Michael Pack’s new film about the Crown Heights riot in 1991, portrayed as the worst anti-Semitic race riot in American history. Here viewers meet Leonard Jeffries of the department of “black studies” at the City University of New York, who charged that Jews ran the slave trade and whites were an inferior breed of “ice people.” The mainstreaming of this racist dogma is the »
Leo Baeck, Berlin, 1935
Jews begin the observance of Yom Kippur at sundown tonight with the Kol Nidre prayer service. Ten years ago our friend Rachel Paulose asked to join us at our service. Since then she has regularly attended the service with us and joined my family when we break our fast, as she is doing again this year. The first time around at services with us she pointed in our prayer book »
Knowing Naomi
Naomi Klein, climate-justice professor at the University of British Columbia, is the author of “How Israel has made trauma a weapon of war,” a 6000-plus-word essay in the October 5 Guardian. Back in 1990 in The Varsity, a University of Toronto publication, Klein authored “Victim to Victimizer,” subtitled “What Israel has become: Racism and misogyny at the core of its being.” As the author explains: When I speak out on »
Notes on Coates
Below Steve takes up the incredible story of the roiling of CBS News by a morning host’s treatment of Ta-Nehisi Coates as an adult writer rather than the author of holy writ. Coates was peddling his new book attacking the existence of Israel. Having read his old book — Between the World and Me, published in 2015 and celebrated as a masterpiece wherever the left holds sway — I was »
The Memorial is the Message
A slick, high-priced television production. Speeches from top officials. A live audience of thousands. A unified show of collective sorrow and military resolve. That is how the Israeli government hoped to mark the passing of one year since Hamas’s surprise and bloody attacks last 7 October. That is from “How Israel has made trauma a weapon of war,” an October 5 Guardian essay by Naomi Klein, “professor of climate justice »
Will America Keep Its Promise to Jews?
Today is a good day to bring to bring to mind George Washington’s famous letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island in 1790, replying to their letter of congratulations to the first American president. They key paragraph from the middle of Washington’s reply: The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal »
10/7 a year later
Our friends at Tikvah deem this the most consequential year in modern Jewish history. They refer, of course, to the invasion of Israel by Hamas this past October 7 and the related events since then. Well, since then…as has frequently been noted by the Israelis, they have been fighting a war on seven fronts. On every front the intention of Israel’s enemies is to wipe it off the map. They »
The October 7 Anniversary Approaches
Tomorrow is the anniversary of Hamas’s massacre of well over 1,000 Israeli Jews on October 7, 2023. That is the purpose for which Hamas exists, and the massacre was celebrated by the overwhelming majority of Gazans as it was taking place. That the massacre included the burning of babies alive and the gang rape of Jewish women only increased the Gazans’ enthusiasm. Anti-Semites around the globe immediately joined in, protesting »
Ta-Nehisi Is Back
Some years ago, Ta-Nehisi Coates was the hottest thing on the Left, viewed as an intellectual of world-historical importance. Scott performed the excruciating task of reading Coates’s Between the World and Me. It won the National Book Award for nonfiction, but Scott called it the worst book he had ever read. Coates made a lot of money from his racist grifting, and then disappeared from sight. He hasn’t been heard »
In re: Op. Grim Beeper
In the tweet below, Aviva Klompas provides a good summary of the apparent facts underlying Israel’s astounding Operation Grim Beeper, as Michael Doran calls it. Doran himself comments in the thread “A few thoughts on Operation Grim Beeper.” As I get it, Israel seems to have manufactured and sold the beepers to Hezbollah through a Hungarian front. Perhaps the terrorists were attracted by the volume discount. On October 8 Hezbollah »
Anti-Semitism On Display
From a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing earlier today: “Fucking Jews…fuck Israelis.” The Senate Judiciary Committee has refused to hold a hearing on antisemitism for the last year. They held one today on “all forms of hate.” It was interrupted by horrific antisemites. Maybe now the Senate will take antisemitism seriously?! pic.twitter.com/Yh6Wi2cJlc — Shabbos Kestenbaum (@ShabbosK) September 17, 2024 Senate Republicans couldn’t get a hearing on anti-Semitism, but the Democrats allowed »
