Specter watch

Arlen Specter appeared on Face the Nation today. Here, via NotSpecter.com and Richard Davis, is the transcript. Note that Specter complains about the people (i.e., conservatives) who came to Pennsylvania to try to defeat him in the primary, but fails to mention the stong support he received from President Bush. Specter’s statements also suggest that he is more inclined to deal with a potential filibuster on judicial nominees by accommodating liberal Democrats than by playing hardball. On the other hand, as he emphasized again on Face the Nation, he has a good record of supporting the president’s nominees to date.
I suspect that the potential problems with a Specter Judiciary Committee chairmanship have more to do with his ego than his ideology. I’m still trying to make up my mind as to whether these potential problems constitute sufficient reason oppose his elevation.
