Byron York NRO suggests that there’s a deal in the works whereby the Republicans would give up their demand that all current nominees receive an up-or-down vote, effectively abandoning a few of the nominees, in exchange for a promise of no future filibusters. It’s difficult for me to see the Democrats giving up the right to filibuster President Bush’s Supreme Court nominees, though. I would think that the liberal special interest groups would rather see the Dems go down fighting (if it comes to that) than to give away the ability to block future appointees, no matter how conservative, in exchange for the scalps of a few current nominees.
JOHN adds: I agree. What’s more, we have it on what should be good authority that Bill Frist remains committed to an up or down vote for all nominees. As long as the Republicans stick to that principle, they’ll be fine.
