Handmaidens to tyrants

While many Americans look to the Supreme Court as the protector of our liberties, in truth it serves as the handmaiden to liberal tyrants who worship the administrative state. At the behest of liberal interest groups the Court has gone far in destroying the First Amendment protections of speech and religion.
The jurisprudence of campaign finance reform is an excellent example of this phenomonenon. In this area that goes to the heart of the constitutional protections of speech and association, the Court has disgraced itself blessing restrictions large and small. On the other hand, it has at the same time held that the First Amendment protects nude dancing and flag burning.
One guy who has noticed some of the deformation wrought by liberal reformers and by the Supreme Court is Robert Samuelson. His column today is excellent: “First amendment showdown for the Court.”
