Japan to Deploy Missile Defense

Japan announced today that it intends to build a missile defense system. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said the system is necessary because of “a spread of missiles and a rise in weapons of mass destruction.” No doubt the Japanese are concerned mostly about North Korea, but the logic of missile defense is so compelling that it is hard to see how any country with the capability to develop such a system can fail to do so.
