Deja vu all over again

Our friends at RealClearPolitcs place columns by White House assistant Peter Wehner and New Republic senior editor Lawrence Kaplan side by side. Each column invokes Vietnam; together the two columns provide contrasting perspectives on the irresponsibility of Democratic politicians on the war. Wehner tends to find the behavior inexcusable, Kaplan tends to excuse it. The fault with Kaplan’s column is its treatment of unfolding events as given or foreordained while they are still susceptible of being influenced by men of good will such as he. Kaplan’s column has an Olympian detachment that is inappropriate to the occasion. Nevertheless, both are good and troubling columns.
