Base? What Base?

This morning’s Washington Times headlines: “Illegals bill sinks Bush job approval:”

[A] new Rasmussen Reports poll found Mr. Bush’s approval rating dropped to an all-time low for that poll, at 34 percent.
“The president’s ratings have tumbled each time immigration reform dominates the news,” Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports, said in his analysis.

Mickey Kaus wrote yesterday:

Using advanced, high-tech tools, Karl Rove has found the last pocket of support for Bush and destroyed it with laser-like efficiency.

(Via InstaPundit.) I don’t blame Rove, actually. Like most of what President Bush does, his position on immigration is heartfelt and sincere. Do you remember all the talk during Bush’s first term about how he intended to “spend his political capital?” This was said to be a lesson he learned from his father’s Presidency. I never realized that by “spending his political capital,” he meant driving his approval rating down to zero by the time he left office.
