This day in baseball history

On May 28, 1960, the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in 14 innings. Sandy Koufax, starting on four days rest after his one-hitter against Pittsburgh, pitched all the way into the 14th and took the loss.
In his 13 plus innings of work, Koufax gave up only 3 hits and struck out 15. However, he also allowed 9 walks.
In all, Koufax faced 49 hitters, 24 of whom either walked or struck-out. He probably threw 200 pitches or more.
The Dodgers nearly won the game in nine innings. They were leading 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and no one on base. However, Frank Thomas tied the game with a home run.
In the 14th, Koufax walked Ed Bouchee and Ernie Banks, and was lifted for Ed Roebuck. Don Zimmer won the game with a base hit against his former team.
Not surprisingly, Koufax was not the same pitcher for months after this marathon outing. In his most recent five starts (counting this one), he had never failed to make it into the eighth inning. In his next five, he only made it past the sixth inning only once. And his ERA climbed from 3.48, following the May 28 Cubs game, to 4.56 in early August. After that, Koufax regained his form and finished the season with a 3.91 mark.
