The politics of envy

John notes below the launching of the SpaceX IPO (ticker symbol: SPCX), which makes Elon Musk (on paper) the world’s first trillionaire (with a “t,” quatro commas in Silicon Valley speak.) And he made a lot of other people, rank-and-file workers, first-time millionaires (dos commas).

I am weak in the face of many of the cardinal sins, but envy is not among them. Not so America’s leading Democrats.

Elizabeth Warren:

Elon Musk just became the world’s first trillionaire.

The typical American household would have to work more than 11 MILLION years to make Elon Musk’s level of wealth.

We need a wealth tax.

Bernie Sanders:

Today, Elon Musk, a trillionaire, pays the same amount into Social Security as someone making $184,500.

Bernie, again.

Gavin Newsom:

Americans are struggling to pay for groceries and gas while Elon Musk becomes a TRILLIONAIRE.

When the federal government is for sale, the rich get richer and everyone else gets shafted.

The system is rigged.

Commentators are pointing out that, as spectacular as Musk’s wealth may be, it isn’t enough to pay for Newsom’s idiotic high-speed rail project.

But “rigged”? America is the only place on Earth or Mars where someone could become a trillionaire. Or where a welder on an hourly wage could become an instant millionaire.

Democrats will eventually get their hands on a large chunk of Elon’s wealth, as he sells shares, or his many, many heirs buy stuff with their inherited wealth.

Musk himself is on record as the biggest American taxpayer, ever. And they didn’t even send him a thank-you note.

Musk’s trillions don’t bother me in the least. I hope he produces many trillions more. America and the world will be better off for his efforts.
