Race and the modern Republican Party

The Republican Party was founded in opposition to slavery and polygamy. The spirit of the Democrats’ defense of, and indifference to, slavery survived the postbellum era in the defense of, and indifference to, Jim Crow. Yet the Democrats and their media adjunct have performed a neat trick using imputations of racism against Republicans. It is a recurring theme that has been a powerful political weapon, though the use of it against the Tea Party movement by the usual suspects has done much to inflate and devalue the currency.
For the past several years University of Virginia Professor Gerard Alexander has been hard at work on a book on the true history of race and the modern Republican Party. Professor Alexander put his scholarly work to good use yesterday in the Washington Post column “Conservatism does not equal racism. So why do many liberals assume that it does?”
