Investing in danger

Huma Abedin doesn’t just provide moral support for her immoral husband. According to the Washington Post, she provides his campaign with financial support by appealing to wealthy Democrats:

Abedin, a top aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton, has continued to aggressively work Clinton’s circle — to the annoyance of some — seeking support and financial contributions for Weiner’s mayoral bid.

“People like Huma, but they saw her trading on the Hillary card and resented it. But that didn’t mean they didn’t show up” for Weiner, said a Clinton intimate, one of several who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “The chatter was, if you wanted to stay in Hillary’s good graces, you answer the call from Huma.”

That is how you play the game.

But Abedin made these appeals for cash for her husband’s campaign even though, according to the narrative the two have put out, she knew that Weiner had continued to engage in lewd internet exchanges after he resigned in disgrace from Congress. In other words, she knew, even as she hit on donors for support, that Weiner’s campaign might well implode at any moment.

Her donor targets had no such knowledge. They can thus claim to feel aggrieved that Abedin, trading on her connection with the presumptive Democratic nominee for president in 2016, caused them to open their wallets for the self-destructive Weiner.

Except that these donors weren’t opening their wallets for Weiner; they opened them to stay on the good side of his Clintonista wife. Again from the Post:

Even those who believed Weiner had no shot at winning were eager to stay on the good side of a woman they expect would be a major figure in a Clinton 2016 presidential campaign, should the former secretary of state decide to run.

That is how you play the game, and the investment in Abedin/Clinton is as good as it ever was, if not better.
