Newsom, Elon and Gascon

I’m with Elon,” claimed California Gov. Gavin Newsom in the wake of Musk’s lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission, but the Coiffed One was quick to clarify. “Look, I’m not helping the legal case,” the governor explained. “You can’t bring up that explicit level of politics.” In his view, the Commission should have confined its debate to the merits of the permit but that’s as far as it goes. “These are friends of mine that said that,” quipped Newsom. “These are good commissioners.” On an unelected body like the CCC, there is no such thing.

Missile launches, sonic booms and such have been going on at Vandenberg since the late 1950s. Somehow those rare coastal frogs and birds are only menaced by SpaceX launches, but even that was a dodge. The commissioners object to Musk speaking freely and “injecting himself into the presidential race.” The governor was likely trying to share the spotlight with Musk, one of the great entrepreneurs of our time.

For his part, Gavin Newsom is a coddled, old money politician tied into the Brown, Getty and Pelosi families. He got his start in politics when Willie Brown, Kamala Harris’ former boyfriend, appointed Newsom to the San Francisco Parking and Traffic Commission. Getty bucks helped him establish a winery, but the semi-literate Newsom fails to qualify as an entrepreneur. On the other hand, he is “with George” Gascon, now trying to get the Menendez brothers released.

As San Francisco mayor, Newsom made Gascon chief of police then district attorney when Kamala Harris became attorney general, in an election she likely lost. According to Newsom, Gascon “famously reduced crime while reducing incarceration, and he burnished a national reputation as a leader in the fight to reform our dated system of justice,” and so on. In the 2020 election for LA County DA, Newsom and Harris backed Gascon over black tough-on-crime candidate Jackey Lacey.

Newsom recently signed Senate Bill 1174, which prohibits local governments from enacting or enforcing identification requirements for voting. During the pandemic, people may recall, Newsom’s health bosses demanded to see vaccination papers. With illegals automatically registered to vote when they get their driver’s license, the people have a right to wonder about the recall vote for Newsom in 2021. The Old Money Coiffed One surely has his eye on the White House, so as Dean Martin said, memories are made of this.
