Meeting in Havana

I used to say “Only the wrong survive” as Fidel Castro threatened to live forever. The same thought applied to Iran’s formerly Supeme Leader Ayatollah Khameni until Israel’s long hand settled his fate earlier this year.

Today comes news that CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Havana yesterday to meet with the authorities, including Castro’s grandson. What a legacy. Axios reports on the meeting here.

If only President Trump could wrap up matters with the Iranian regime we might look forward to letting the good times roll in Havana. Thanks to Trump, in any event, Cuba is apparently now running on empty. The situation on the island continues to deteriorate. It’s time for “them” to go. Axios adds:

The Cuban government was the first to reveal the meeting and said it was “part of the efforts to address the current scenario.”

Havana’s readout said the Cuban side demonstrated to Ratcliffe that Cuba is not a threat to the U.S. or a state sponsor of terror, as it was designated in Trump’s first term.

The CIA official said Ratcliffe went to Havana “to deliver President Trump’s message that the United States is prepared to seriously engage on economic and security issues, but only if Cuba makes fundamental changes.”

“During the meeting, Director Ratcliffe and Cuban officials discussed intelligence cooperation, economic stability and security issues, all against the backdrop that Cuba can no longer be a safe haven for adversaries in the Western Hemisphere,” the official said.

Quotable quote: “Cuba’s energy minister said Wednesday that the country had run out of fuel oil and diesel and that blackouts could exceed 20–22 hours per day.”
