There is a concept in contract law that goes by the phrase “a meeting of the minds.” As everyone knows, I’m not a lawyer, but I keep thinking about the phrase whenever I see headlines like this one from Investors Business Daily,
Stock market today: Nasdaq leads rise to record highs on Iran deal hopes.
“Hopes” is the correct word. I don’t see a deal because I don’t think the two sides are working from the same understanding of basic words.

We’ll see. In the meantime, the S&P 500 index reached another all-time high record close above 7,563 and a new intraday record high above 7,568. The index is up over 10 percent for year-to-date 2026.
