General Petraeus Goes to Washington

General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker are in Washington today to give their long-awaited report on our progress in Iraq. Of course, the Democrats didn’t actually wait to hear from Petraeus and Crocker before denouncing what they are expected to say; they have been all over the media for the last week, arguing that the surge is a failure, and anything Petraeus and Crocker might say to the contrary should be disregarded.
Not that our intrepid MSM reporters needed much convincing. Hillary Clinton was on CBS’s Early Show this morning to talk about Petraeus’s report; this is how her exchange with Harry Smith began:

SMITH: David Petraeus is going to come before this committee this morning. He’s going to say, in more elaborate words than I will right now, that the surge is working. The number of attacks in Baghdad have more than doubled in the last two months. About a dozen U.S. servicemen have been killed there in just the last several days.
Do you think the surge is working?
CLINTON: Well, Harry, I think you just made a summary argument against the position that it’s working.

Petraeus will testify before the Senate Armed Service Committee this morning, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this afternoon. That will give all three Presidential contenders a crack at him. Over the course of the day, we will post excerpts from his testimony (and the testimony Senators will give in the form of questions) that we think are of interest.
