Son of Stimulus Goes Down

Senate Democrats tried to move President Obama’s $446 billion “jobs” plan forward tonight–Obama’s plan as modified by Harry Reid, that is. Predictably, the cloture motion garnered only 50 votes, nowhere near the 60 required:

the bill stalled with Democratic Sens. Ben Nelson (Neb.) and Jon Tester (Mont.) joining all 46 voting Republicans to oppose the motion. …

At least three Members of the Democratic Conference who voted to move the legislation forward, Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Jim Webb (D-Va.), said they would have opposed its final passage absent significant adjustments.

So the bill is opposed by a bipartisan Senate majority. No surprise there–the original stimulus bill was a disaster. It didn’t create jobs, and there is strong evidence that it actually destroyed them, as wasteful spending tends to do. But Obama and Reid never expected the bill to pass, it is entirely posturing for 2012.
