“You Want Free Stuff? Vote For the Other Guy”

Campaigning in Illinois, Mitt Romney took a question from a woman who said, “So you’re all for like, ‘yay, freedom,’ and all this stuff. And ‘yay, like pursuit of happiness.’ You know what would make me happy? Free birth control.” Romney’s answer was, I think, outstanding. The lines are drawn in this year’s presidential election with unusual clarity.

Everyone laughed at the woman who said in 2008 that she was voting for Obama so she wouldn’t have to pay to fill up her car with gasoline. But the truth is, she wasn’t too far afield from the typical Democratic voter. Nor has anything really changed in the intervening years. Given the historic pace at which the Obama administration has racked up debt, persistent slow growth and high unemployment, and Obama’s failure to make good on his promises to secure world peace and control the ocean tides, what possible reason can there be to vote to re-elect him other than a desire for free stuff?

JOE adds: To finish out John’s flashback, here’s that telling moment from 2008 when a supporter revealed her fondest wishes for the Obama presidency:
