The Latest on Dylann Roof

A web site created by Dylann Roof called The Last Rhodesian has come to light. It includes a sort of manifesto written by Roof. As I’ve said before, it doesn’t make sense to pay a lot of attention to the ideology of a deranged person, but you will probably be hearing a lot about Roof’s ideas in the weeks to come, so here are a few lowlights.

In general, the manifesto is, as you would expect, a racist screed. Roof is an anti-patriot; he says he “hates the sight of” the American flag. Here he pictured himself burning a flag. In another photo he is standing on, and spitting on, the stars and stripes:

Parenthetically, the virtually muscle-free Roof’s choosing to pose in a Gold’s Gym shirt probably illustrates the fact that he is delusional.

Roof presumably used this .45 Glock to commit his murders. Contrary to initial reports, it is now said that he bought the gun himself. This evidently means that he passed a background check, which wouldn’t be surprising, since I am not aware of any reason why he would be in the NICS database. President Obama and others have tried to demagogue the Charleston shootings by urging more gun control, but I haven’t seen anyone try to explain what measures would have prevented Roof from buying a firearm. Short of banning all civilian ownership of guns, that is.

In other photos, Roof poses with a Confederate flag. Watch for liberals to seize on that fact to advocate banning displays of that flag.

Roof acknowledges how alone he is in his racist views: “We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet.” Pressed for time, Roof regretted that he wasn’t able to fully articulate his views:

Unfortunately at the time of writing I am in a great hurry and some of my best thoughts, actually many of them have been to be left out and lost forever.

It’s probably just as well.
