Below I note Professor David Gelernter’s June 4, 2004 Wall Street column on the campaign to honor the service of our veterans. Professor Gelernter detects “a tidal wave of phoniness.” He finds the wave of phoniness “especially intense among members of the 1960s generation who once chose to treat all present and former soldiers like dirt and are willing at long last to risk some friendly words about World War II veterans, now that most are safely underground and guaranteed not to talk back, enjoy their celebrity or start acting like they own the joint.” This year Professor Gelernter returned to the subject in his Los Angeles Times column (picked up by Jewish World Review) on the Battle of Midway: “Hear the heroes of June 4th.” See also Ben Stein’s “The cost of the war on terrorism.”
