I got the opportunity last night to ask Charles Krauthammer (we did schtick together again for a Pacific Research Institute dinner in Newport Beach) what he thought went on during that 90-minute phone call between Obama and Putin. Were they exchanging tips? Charles thought Putin must have needed his ophthalmologist at his side to keep his eyes from rolling too much. I offered that Putin probably said: “You Americans used to mock our grain harvests, but seriously—Obamacare?” Or maybe Obama took literally Putin’s praise for his flexibility.
