Support Elise Stefanik; defeat a tax cheat

Elise Stefanik is running for Congress in New York’s 21st district, an open seat. She is Power Line pick. Her credentials are outstanding.

Stefanik’s opponent is Aaron Woolf, a wealthy Democrat whose major claim to fame is that he produced and directed a documentary called “King Corn.” The film is a critique of federal subsidies for American corn farmers.

We pointed to the hypocrisy of the venture when we noted that Woolf and his wife own at least $400,000 worth of stock in McDonald’s. “King Corn” singled out this company for attack because of its fatty corn-fed burgers and high-fructose corn-syrup sodas.

But Woolf’s hypocrisy doesn’t end there. Brendan Bordelon of NRO reports that while Woolf was producing his anti-subsidy attack, he received three separate tax warrants on his documentary-film company for failing to pay state taxes. Moreover, Woolf’s company was itself receiving subsidies from the congressionally funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting, while failing to pay the required state taxes.

The tax delinquencies were small. The same cannot be said of the delinquencies by his natural food store Urban Rustic. It owed more than $130,000 in back taxes, penalties, and interest and took more than a year to pay off the balance, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

We selected Elise Stefanik as a Power Line pick based on her merit and without knowing about her opponent’s demerits. But Aaron Woolf’s hypocrisy and inattentiveness to tax obligations provide additional reasons to support Elise. You can do so here.
