The appeal of Hillary drunk

The National Enquirer reports that Ms. Hillary has a drinking problem and that her advisers want her to do a stint in rehab before she undertakes the rigors of a presidential campaign. You have to appreciate the Enquirer headline: “Boozy Hillary Clinton secret rehab shocker.” And you have to love the photos that the Enquirer runs with its big “scoop.”

I don’t discount the story completely. After all, the Enquirer got the goods on John Edwards and performed its solemn journalistic duty with them once it had the goods nailed down. All the while the mainstream media willfully averted their eyes.

In this case, however, I think it highly unlikely that “sources close to the former First Lady and ex-Secretary of State” are confiding in the National Enquirer. Doesn’t Edward Klein have a monopoly on “sources close to” the Clintons dishing dirt? I believe he does.

The Enquirer story calls to mind (to my mind, anyway) the adage referring to the appeal from Philip drunk to Philip sober. What is that story?, you ask. The story goes back to the woman who was issued an unjust sentence by a drunken Philip of Macedon. She declared that she would appeal the punishment. When Philip asked to whom she would appeal, she replied: “From Philip drunk to Philip sober.” According to the story, Philip reversed his judgment when he sobered up.

The judgments of Ms. Hillary are stern, but I seriously doubt that they are harsher when she is inebriated than when she is sober. Indeed, I would guess that they are milder when she is under the influence. We have seen with our own eyes that Ms. Hillary sober manifests a grating personality. In this case we would probably have to modify the adage to refer to the appeal of Hillary drunk.
