Good Vibrations

Britain was once a mighty empire on which the Sun never set. The Royal Navy, now barely a shadow of its former self, ruled the waves. Along with its loss of military might, Britain’s decline can be measured by the descent of its storied House of Commons to a level of frivolity more typical of today’s celebrity television.

Thus: Labour MP wants to take adult toys into parliament for ‘summer of sex’.

A Labour MP is campaigning for 2026 to be the “summer of sex” with a tour and exhibition of sex toys in parliament.

Samantha Niblett, the MP for South Derbyshire, has launched her “Yes Sex Please, We’re British!” campaign before a debate on lifelong sex education in the Commons in the early autumn.

The 46-year-old MP has also met with Lovehoney, the sex toy retailer, where she learnt that “as well as making you feel good, [masturbation] is good for your health”.

The MP refers here to an activity that has never before needed governmental encouragement.

She is also planning a sex toy exhibition in parliament, although she said she was unsure if there would be rules prohibiting it.

We can only hope. One might be tempted to think that it was the introduction of women into politics that brought about the frivolity we see now, but for the example of Margaret Thatcher. One wonders how Thatcher would have responded to the idea of a sex toy exhibition in Parliament–or, for that matter, to Britain’s inability to get a single ship to Cyprus and back without needing repairs.
