This comes from Wales, where Google’s AI says the population is 94% white, with 2.9% identifying as Asian or Asian/White, and 0.9% as black or mixed race. Which makes this doubly weird:
Welsh nurseries have been advised to report children for “racist incidents” in guidance backed by the Labour Government.
The taxpayer-funded guidance for childminders aims to make nurseries and play groups “anti-racist” environments.
Childcare workers are advised to call police if a “racist incident” occurs that could be deemed a hate crime.
This guidance applies to children from infants to age 12. Presumably the “hate crimes” would be committed by older children. But the guidance has been promulgated by the National Day Nurseries Association.
Childcare professionals are advised to audit their spaces to ensure that books, dolls, posters and displays are suitably diverse, and to “make sure your anti-racist stance is visible”, including in snacks provided.
I think that means only 94% of your snacks should be Twinkies. But this one is a little scary:
The guidance also tells workers: “Toileting practices vary across cultures. These practices may be very different from your own, but it does not make them unsanitary or incorrect.”
Certainly not! The guidance disapproves of any opposition to uncontrolled Third World immigration:
The toolkit suggests that a risk assessment could be undertaken by leaders to protect “global majority” staff against the threat of racism, which it says has been heightened by a “changing political context” and “racist demonstrations taking place across the UK”.
That “global majority” staff, if any, would be part of a vanishingly small minority in Wales. In former times, everyone assumed that meant they should assimilate to the majority, not the other way around.
What follows is downright bizarre. The “beauty of melanin”? Even toddlers are going to think these people are nuts:
The toolkit advises that it is “never too early” to speak to children about skin colour, and that children should be told about the “beauty/complexity of melanin”.
And, for goodness’ sake, don’t let them know you are a European:
Those working with children are advised that their judgments of behaviour may be incorrect and biased, with the toolkit stating: “Behaviour may be judged through a Eurocentric or personal lens. Misinterpretation of cultural norms that differ from our own can lead to unfair or incorrect observations.”
More at the link. I think that generally, this kind of thing is in retreat. But it continues to rear its head wherever there is money to be made:
This guidance is contained in a document created by Diversity and Anti-Racist Professional Learning.
The organisation, based at Cardiff Metropolitan University, has been allocated more than £1.3m by the Welsh Government since 2021, and Labour ministers have endorsed its teaching in Wales.
