From Reuters,
No Evidence of Political Motive in Murder of Former UK Minister Widdecombe, Police Say.
Ann Widdecombe was a prominent figure on the right in Britain. She served in government under former Prime Minister John Major as a Conservative and member of the U.K. Parliament. Later in life she joined the Reform party as a spokesperson and member of the European Parliament. She also did some reality TV shows. Put it this way: I knew who she was, and I don’t follow UK politics that closely.
She was murdered last week. Reuters reports,
Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in rural southwest England on Thursday with what police described as “serious injuries”. Officers arrested a white British man in Rotherham, northern England, late on Saturday.
The most important facts that Reuters wants you to take away from their article is that the suspect (age 28) is “white” and “British.”
So, what is the motive? Robbery, perhaps? “Officers” aren’t saying. As it happens, we are not allowed to ask,
Police urged the public not to speculate about possible motives while the investigation remains ongoing.
But don’t worry, Reuters quotes an “official,”
Detectives remain open-minded about the potential motive. At this stage, there is nothing to suggest that it was politically motivated.
Sky News UK reports,
The arrest was carried out by officers from counter-terrorism, North East and South Yorkshire police on behalf of Devon and Cornwall police.
“Counter-terrorism”? The U.K. Sun includes a wealth of detail in their report, including a timeline of events.
Did we mention this?
The suspect is described as a white British national.
Move along, nothing to see here.
JOHN adds: In typical British fashion, the authorities are more concerned with squashing speculation than telling the public what happened. Trying to do their part, the London Times disabled comments on their story on Widdecombe’s murder. Obviously, then, people are speculating. Specifically, Widdecombe was a defender of women, and some wonder whether her killing was the latest in a lengthening series of “trans” murders. I have no idea whether it was or wasn’t, but the idea that British authorities and British newspapers can dispel speculation by keeping information close to the vest is futile or worse.
