Trump’s Iowa edge

The highly regarded Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll was published this past Monday. The Register reported the results here and the results are striking.

According to the poll, President Biden draws 32 percent of likely Iowa voters. Thirty-two percent! Register that, so to speak.

Trump leads Biden 50 percent to 32 percent among likely Iowa voters. Trump’s Iowa edge over Biden is a mere 18 points. And one more thing: Biden’s approval rating among all Iowans has fallen to 28 percent.

We should add some historical perspective. In the 2020 election, Trump beat Biden by a little over 9 points. Going back to 2012, Obama edged Romney by nearly six points. In 2008, Obama disposed of John McCain by more than 9 points.

The Register reports the rest of the current poll results as follows: “Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who says he has qualified for Iowa’s presidential ballot, earns 9%. Another 2% of likely Iowa voters pick Libertarian presidential candidate Chase Oliver, 3% say they would vote for someone else, 1% would not vote and 3% are not sure.”

Iowa has become a Republican state. It has a Republican governor and two Republican senators. It has four Republican representatives in Congress. Minnesota it ain’t. Rather, it is an oasis of sanity. The current poll is nevertheless worthy of note. One can only hope that it constitutes a portent.
