Some Democrats demand that Joe Biden to step aside while others want the octogenarian to stay the course. Both sides might wonder what the deep state wants, particularly the Central Intelligence Agency. Consider Neutering the CIA: Why U.S. Intelligence Versus Trump Has Long-Term Consequences by John A. Gentry. According to the former CIA analyst, the politicization of CIA intelligence was “aimed at Trump” and the IC agencies are “available for reactivation in the event of another serious candidacy by Trump or the election of another Republican president.” Trump is definitely a serious candidate but the CIA “reactivation” could possibly go another way.
Former attorney general William Barr launched his career with the CIA, and supported the Mar-a-Lago raid and the classified documents case. Barr now accepts Trump as the candidate, and contends that “a continuation of the Biden administration is national suicide.” What if current CIA bosses, particularly those on the operations side, come to share that view? And what if Biden remains unyielding?
As Victor Davis Hanson notes, slobbering Soviet gerontocrat Leonid Brezhnev, portrayed as a powerhouse by state media, suddenly dies and is replaced by Yuri Andropov. According to coincidence theory, nothing was amiss, but consider the symmetry with the dysfunctional Joe Biden, waxworks effigy of a president. The Delaware Democrat, Hanson explains, has “outsourced his administration to a vestigial hard-left apparat from the Obama years.”
As Edward Jay Epstein noted in Deception: The Invisible War Between the KGB and the CIA, the CIA was never the same after the firing of counterintelligence specialist James Jesus Angleton, who went all the way back to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). That firing took place in 1974 and six years later, the CIA hired John Brennan, who in 1976 voted for the Stalinist Gus Hall, candidate of the Communist Party USA, a wholly owned subsidiary of the USSR. Brennan should have been shown the door but in 2013 Obama picked the Gus Hall voter to run the CIA.
In 2020, Brennan joined 51 “intelligence community” types, including former CIA directors, contending that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation, which they knew was untrue. In these conditions, with Trump a serious candidate and Biden getting worse by the day, pretty much anything is possible.
