Trump: Another Reagan? [Updated]

Would that it were so! But Trump at least is smart enough to ask the question that won Reagan the 1980 election: Are you better off than you were four years ago?

Trump needs to run on a single premise: he was a better president than Joe Biden. Things were better when he was in charge, and have gone downhill under Biden and Harris. If he has the discipline to stick with that message, I think he has a good shot.

But, being Trump, he frequently digresses. And every time he goes off message, reporters have an excuse to spend another day writing about something other than the appalling Biden/Harris record. (And now, the equally terrible record of Tim Walz.)

At the moment, at even odds, I would bet on Kamala Harris. The Democrats believe that by their last minute switcheroo, substituting Harris for Joe Biden, they can leave Biden’s record in the dust and run a basement campaign for Kamala as the “first black woman president.” The less she says, the better. And reporters, almost all of them, are co-conspirators.

This crude strategy can be overcome, but can it be defeated by a disorganized and undisciplined Donald Trump? I doubt it. Trump needs to get on his game, or he is likely to lose.

UPDATE: This is good, for example, even if it refers to Walz and not Harris. Disastrous policies are the Democrats’ stock in trade:
