John posted video of Margaret Brennan’s exchange with Secretary of State Marco Rubio here yesterday. It may be instructive to pause over it for another moment.
In the exchange, Brennan criticized Vice President Vance’s speech at the Munich Security Conference (video and text posted here). Brennan instructed Rubio: “Well, he [Vance] was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide.” Rubio responded as a well-informed man might and Vance himself commented on X that it was “a crazy exchange.”
Brennan is the moderator of Face the Nation, CBS’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, and a fill-in and substitute anchor for CBS Evening News. Brennan combines ignorance, stupidity, malice, and condescension in a lethal mix to which conservatives have grown accustomed. The corporate press is saturated with it. Let us call it the Brennan Syndrome.
Brennan put me in mind of of Dean Wormer’s instruction to the men of the Delta House fraternity in Animal House: “Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.” That is an eternal verity of the Socratic kind. The Brennan Syndrome also warrants adult intervention. It imposes severe limitations on the leftist mind, yet it has its (political) uses and thus continues to thrive.
