Freddy Comes to America

We are late to the party on this one, so you probably have already heard about Freddy, the German soccer fan who came to America to cheer for his country’s World Cup team. Freddy and two companions flew into Atlanta and embarked on a journey across the American South, driving through Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, and on to Texas.

Freddy documented his trip on his Twitter feed. He was delighted by what he found: Buc-ees, Waffle House, Walmart, Bass Pro Shops, and more:

In the land of the SEC, Freddy was blown away by the stadiums he encountered:

Freddy was impressed by the kindness of the Americans he encountered in his travels.

Freddy’s posts started to gain attention, and many thousands tuned in to his journey. This is how crazy it got:

In their car, Freddy and his friends listened to country music and heard Ella Langley over and over, as one will:

Someone clued Ella Langley in, and she comped Freddy and his friends with tickets to a concert where they will be able to meet her backstage.

When Freddy’s group got to Houston for Germany’s first game, they stayed in a fabulous hotel suite, courtesy of JJ Watt, who also provided them with swag of various kinds.

So it has been quite a story. Liberals don’t know what to make of it. (Here, I am just borrowing from InstaPundit):

“[T]he South is welcoming a German tourist in a way we would never have anticipated”

Who is “we”?

Hasn’t the South always had the reputation of being friendlier and more welcoming than the North? I suppose CNN, founded in Atlanta, would have acknowledged that, back when the South was Democrat.

Anyway, there is more from Freddy at the link way above, and he will continue posting new material. Freddy is almost enough to turn me into a soccer fan. Almost.
