Rampant Anti-Semitism, and the Democrats

On Thursday evening, a malevolent crowd at a public forum at Rutgers threatened Jewish students and drove the university’s president from the room. The Free Beacon reports:

A Rutgers University town hall descended into anarchy Thursday evening as anti-Israel students chanted demands to “globalize the intifada”…

“Globalize the intifada” means that no Jew should ever be able to live in safety, anywhere in the world.

…hurled anti-Semitic insults at Jewish students…

For better or worse, pro-Hamas demonstrations across the West, including but not limited to American university campuses, have put to rest the fiction that there is a difference between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism.

…and forced the school’s president to end the event early, according to videos of the event and attendees who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon.

This video shows the end of the president’s presentation, in which he announced that Rutgers will not terminate its relationship with Tel Aviv University, with the result that security escorted him out a side door.

Joe Gindi, a Syrian Jew and sophomore at Rutgers University who spoke to the Free Beacon, said that Jewish students wanted to hear what the university’s president had to say. Gindi said that after talking to police, Jewish students were told they could leave through the emergency exits. Nearly all of them did.

“I’m not going to let this mob take over my university. I’m not going to be told that we should leave through the emergency exits. I refuse to. I refuse to be bullied by these people,” said Gindi.

Good for him. Courage is, always and everywhere, in short supply. And more often than not, standing up to bullies works.

In another video captured by a student, protesters shouted at Rutgers Jewish students to “go back home.” Protesters also told attendees that Jerusalem is their capital, not Israel’s, and that Birthright Israel—a program offered through the school’s Hillel chapter for young adults of Jewish descent to visit Israel—is not welcome on campus.

“Go back home”? Where might that be? Not Israel, evidently. Maybe, like the former “dean of the White House press corps,” Helen Thomas, they want Jews to go “back” to Germany and Poland. But they don’t want Jews here in the U.S., or in Israel.

Many liberals try to distance themselves from these pro-Hamas thugs, some of whom are Middle Easterners who never should have been let into the country. But the fact is that the anti-Semitic violence we are now seeing is of a piece with what liberals often do, when they can get away with it. The Democratic Party has been a party of violence for a long time, as this video reminds us. The current anti-Semitic variation is right at home in today’s Democratic Party:

That video could have been ten times as long. The Democratic Party’s tolerance of violence, as we saw on the day when Donald Trump was inaugurated in 2017–the Democrats’ riot did at least 10,000 times as much damage as the January 6 protest–in the George Floyd riots, and in Antifa terrorism, all of which were largely coddled by Democratic Party officials, has metastasized across the country. And now it is manifesting itself in a grotesque and unAmerican anti-Semitism.

That isn’t going to change until the Democratic Party pays a price.
